The British National Portrait Gallery mounted this show to invite the public in to their institution that is dedicated to portraiture and the social history it represents. Not necessarily making it a claim to art as Hodgkin made a successful career making paintings, in England— but….“Absent Friends.†The words sort of hang in the air…Has the museum made their own portrait of the British artist ?One central theme that is identified by the curators is the question of how Hodgkin, painting as he does, make a portrait? He does it with the weather, why not with people?A British portrait gallery is chock full of resemblances and social values ( Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, (but not Graham Sutherland's 1954 portrait of Winston Churchill— destroyed!). Only worthy works that were produced at some one’s particular expense to valorize important figures of the day.. Portrait painting reifies only “some†things about its subjects and their societies. And without penalty, it can discriminate across the board— Hodgkin does none of this.Since resemblance has no standing in Hodgkin’s process, is this simply a collection of recollections— of distant or deceased people the artist knew? In the artist’s mind— in their recollection—evinced in the paintings, and if deceased— why not simple valorization of their existences? Hypothetically, Hodgkin would be able to imbue his painting with some aspect of these subjects— mere apparitions of their past existence, to public view.Despite the curators’ attempts to validate these paintings through various discussions, nothing was shown to definitively demonstrate how these works connected content to the public. Their premise “portrait†presents an unavoidable caesura. Were they Hodgkins? Well yes the were, definitively attributable to him. They all represented somebody from his experience, but here is the disconnect: we still don’t know what that is—we were better off with the weather.Another problem surfaces: Picasso looking at Stravinsky made a “Picasso.†Giacometti intensely observed his named subject, but made only “Giacomettis.†Bacon. Freud. Frank Auerbach. All made their paintings— un-suborned.Hodgkin makes his own paintings also, but they weren’t all meant for everyone. To shore-up the experience, the curators included little bio’s of the “people at issue†(not sitters as such) and how Hodgkin knew them, sort of like little curriculum vitae— customized to the occasion. It had the impression of the experience of the show itself, as if seeing the paintings on the wall— with liner notes to each piece. To me this was rather like notes from a book signing turned upside-down. But I suppose it is something very British—a brand of social networking in British life. The paintings that read for me were not the so-called portraits, but those about Hodgkin himself— i.e. self-portraits: waking up in Naples, artist & model, David Hockney in Hollywood, in bed in Venice. In the end, ALL THESE PAINTINGS ARE SELF-PORTRAITS— while only some admit as much directly. The curators include one of his last works— in the vein of a self-portrait. As in James Joyce’s “ A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,†Hodgkin paints “Portrait of the Artist Listening to Music†[as an old man] (2011-2016). Here he is entirely successful—it has no caesura.[ There is a wonderful 10 page Chronology at the end of this book including, among many other things, an otherwise unpublished print of the artist with Susan Sontag on the Nile in 1991 by Annie Leibovitz. The artist collaborated on Sontag’s book “This Is The Way We Live Now†(1991), an AIDS benefit, with hand colored engravings. ]
I really like this book Howard Hodgkin ! He has reached a point of art abstraction that other artist are still trying to achieve ! He is the short hand of depicting composition .
Hodgkin' tribute to his friends in abstract and expressive bright colors. The last testament from a great artist and a noble soul
Another great Howard Hodgkin book.
